Beautiful Bay Windows

Don't you just love bay windows? I do. They fill rooms with light, capture splendid views, bring the garden in, and make happy, welcoming nooks. This sunny breakfast area, set in a bay, takes advantage of the sweeping ocean view. The windows are topped with transoms that incorporate a diamond pattern found elsewhere in the house. The windows climb to the crown molding, making the room feel larger<br /><br /><img src="http://images.meredith.com/remodel/images/2008/12/p_100114213_1215BW.jpg" style="width: 550px; height: 550px;" /><br />A large and dramatic arched bay window allows light to stream into this master bath, while a freestanding screen provides privacy.<p><img src="http://images.meredith.com/remodel/images/2008/12/p_100237281_1215BW.jpg" style="width: 550px; height: 610px;" /></p>Simplicity was the key to success in this breakfast area. Rather than overwhelming the space with architectural flourishes, the windoway was maximized while its supports were kept to a minimum--offering wide-open views of the ocean stretching out in the distance.<br /><br /><p><img src="http://images.meredith.com/remodel/images/2008/12/p_SIP947194_1215BW.jpg" style="width: 551px; height: 611px;" /><br /></p><p>The large bay window in this living room enhances the waterfront home's cottage style. Placing mullions only on the top half of double-hung windows maximizes the ocean view at eye level.<br /></p><br /><img src="http://images.meredith.com/remodel/images/2008/12/p_100229715_1215BW.jpg" style="width: 550px; height: 610px;" /><br />A window seat set into a bay on this upper-level landing serves as one of the home's inviting hideaways. The windows can be cranked open to allow fresh air and glorious garden scents to fill the room. Maryland House by Thomas Pheasant

Interior deisgner Thomas Pheasant was appointed to reconfigure this residence in Bethesda, Maryland. A soft palette was used throughout the rooms. Elegant, well-balanced and inviting. River House & Safari House in Zambia

Let´s have some fun today and look at these two guest retreats in Zambia.<br /><br /><img alt="" class="slideImg" id="slideImg" src="http://www.architecturaldigest.com/images/homes/2009/11/zambian_retreats/01_zambian_retreats.jpg" /><br />In Zambia on the Chongwe River, a tributary of the Zambezi, Robin and Jo Pope hired safari guide Neil Rocher to design a safari retreat whose undulations follow the contours of the trees he used as the frame.<br /><br /><img alt="" class="slideImgLeft" id="slideImg" src="http://www.architecturaldigest.com/images/homes/2009/11/zambian_retreats/03_zambian_retreats.jpg" /><br />The main room contains the sitting and dining areas. A winter thorn trunk, appearing as if it had fallen there, serves as a table base and bench seating.<br /><br /><img alt="" class="slideImg" id="slideImg" src="http://www.architecturaldigest.com/images/homes/2009/11/zambian_retreats/04_zambian_retreats.jpg" /><br />“The concept,” designer Neil Rocher explains, “was an organic termite mound coming up from the ground.”<br /><br /><img alt="" class="slideImg" id="slideImg" src="http://www.architecturaldigest.com/images/homes/2009/11/zambian_retreats/05_zambian_retreats.jpg" /><br />Even the baths—where the showers are waterfalls and some of the basins are carved out of Zambian stone by sculptor Eddie Mumba—look right out over the river and the bush. He graduated from Radley College, Oxfordshire, and later studied law at Reading University in the UK. This was followed by a life-changing two and a half year voyage, circumnavigating the globe under sail.<br /><br />He then moved to New York City and studied photography and design at the Parsons School of Design. Within three years of arriving in America he had launched his career, specializing in interior and architectural photography.
